Artist. Geek. Oil painting. Vegetarian recipes. Slow lifestyle. Eco. Contemplation. Foraging. Symbolism. Myth. New technology. Animation. Add all & simmer.

25 or so things you may not know about me

  • So to begin, wine is something I simply don't appreciate. Useful in cooking, but otherwise undrinkable stuff. Beer however, well pass it on over. Flat and room temperature please. Thank my six years living in the UK for that.

  • Synesthesia - crossover of the senses. When I'm tired I see colours sparked by sounds. It's not disturbing, it's subtle & fun. Also useful - when I see the flashing lights, bedtime is overdue.

  • I am a very fast reader, a slow writer and I first learned to touch type at 37.

  • I am not shy. I am quiet and reserved. These are quite different.

  • It is a rare event indeed that has me in heels. As in, weddings and funerals, and even then I end up padding about barefoot after a few hours.

  • Life drawing classes bore me. Even though I recognise their technical worth. Probably because I have zero interest in drawing people. While I admire portrait art, I don't feel compelled to put people anywhere in my pictures, even as a 'balance' or 'point of interest'. I now think there's a connection with the next snippet.

  • My brain seems to recognise people by their mannerisms and their hair. So things such as the way someone walks, their gestures, speech patterns and hairstyle. This leads to some silly situations. I have trouble recognising people in photos (they're not moving) and if they dramatically alter their hairstyle I won't know them (unless I already know them well). I don't seem to clearly remember the actual face until many encounters later. I am informed that this is called prosopagnosia

  • My friends say I am stubborn. I prefer the terms 'tenacious' and 'determined'.

  • Due to my complete lack of patience (read: bad temper) with telemarketers and data mining call centres, I don't answer blocked or unknown numbers on my phone. Leave a message. I return calls to real people. As an aside, my favourite way to taunt persistent telemarketers is to receive the call & keep saying hello as though I can't hear anything until they hang up. Permanently gets rid of most of them.

  • I am not a movie buff. I seem to have no ability to remember names or plots or characters or actors or dates. Also, I find most tv shows and movies too violent or too predictable to watch. Even the exaggerated drama in ads will have me in tears. So I don't own a TV.

  • Despite the previous point - I love animation. This short is an all-time favourite: RiBA

  • Since owning and breeding chickens I have discovered why the phrase 'bird brain' exists.

  • I'm often told I'm a great listener. People tell me their secrets. I don't go looking for this.

  • When I dream it's in vivid hypercolour and 3D but there is rarely any sound.

  • I am the go-to DIY person in my household.

  • My favourite colour has always been blue. The shade varies but the colour is constant. At the moment the shade is an aqua blue.

  • I greatly prefer stairs to elevators and you will never ever in a million years find me caving, the thought of which makes my skin crawl.

  • Swimming is the most exhausting exercise to me. Enjoyable, but I have to sleep afterwards and eat enough for 2 days to recover.

  • When I visited San Francisco for a month, I ate burritos every single day.

  • I hate washing up. Not ideal for someone who likes to cook.

  • I hate being cold. My favourite season is summer. I am powered by sunshine.

  • My favourite city in the world so far is Edinburgh. Why aren't I living there? See the previous 'about me' snippet.

  • Even before I went vegetarian in my late teens/early twenties, I never liked eating fish and now that I'm vego I don't anyway (I'm not one of those 'vegetarians' who mistake fish for plant life). In fact the smell of seafood makes me gag.
